#IfSlaveryWasAChoice Hashtag Roasts Kanye West With Savage Mockery

Yesterday, rapper, designer, and “dragon energy” purveyor Kanye West told TMZ that he thinks slavery is “a choice.”

The Internet reacted swiftly, not in the least because Kanye quickly became a champion of the alt-right with his ignorant, deeply hurtful statement.

Though Kanye tried to either mitigate or double down on the damage with a confounding tweetstorm (it’s difficult to tell), Twitter had already turned his asinine statement into an epic hashtag, #IfSlaveryWereAChoice.

Black Twitter transformed a subject rife with pain and darkness into humor as users set about imagining alternate scenarios for a history in which slavery actually was a choice.
