Mom Outraged When Publix Refuses To Put ‘Summa Cum Laude’ On Her Son’s Graduation Cake

College graduation can be an extremely proud moment for any parent watching their child receive their diploma.

Proud mom Cara Koscinski couldn’t have been happier that her son, Jacob, graduated Summa Cum Laude with an outstanding 4.97 GPA. Of course, Koscinski wanted to throw Jacob an outrageous party to celebrate all of his hard work paying off. So, to top off the party with family and friends, this mom ordered a sheet cake from store Publix that was custom-designed to say something special. However, when she saw the final results–she was outraged.

Koscinski posted to Facebook that the store “refused” to put “Summa Cum Laude” on the cake because they deemed the Latin word “cum” to be “profanity.” She wrote:

Ok. I didn’t want to post but I cannot resist. I ordered Jacob’s graduation cake from Publix. A $70 cake!! He earned a 4.79 GPA. Publix refused to write the words Summa Cum Laude because I was using ‘profanity!’ They put three dashes instead of the word!
How utterly ridiculous and I will be speaking to a manager for a refund. Shame on you Publix for turning an innocent Latin phrase into a total embarrassment for having to explain to my son and others (including my 70 year old mother) about this joke of a cake. My son was humiliated!!! I seriously couldn’t make this crap up!!!!
Funny-not funny.
Edit: The person who picked up the cake on the day of the graduation did not know what I requested to be put on the cake.

When ordering the cake online, Koscinski specified that she wanted the cake to say Summa Cum Laude, and even reinforced the idea in the notes section.

However, the people at Publix still created the cake with the three lines instead of “Cum” and completely embarrassed this mom, her son, and everyone at the party–having to explain the “joke” and mistake.

Commenters on Facebook were equally outraged and surprised that Publix would be so ignorant and stupid to do such a thing to this cake (which, cost this mom $70).

According to The Washington Post, Publix gave her a full refund and a store gift card. However, you do only graduate once and this was supposed to be a special moment for the entire family–not an embarrassment. Do better, Publix.
