To The Person Who Relapsed Remember We Are All Human

I can bet this has happened more than once before. I can also bet you’re probably being really hard on yourself right now. It kind of feels like it’s one step forward and a million back. Not only have you disappointed yourself but maybe you disappointed other people as well. But I don’t want you to think about those other people. I don’t want you to think about the mistake you made. Together we are going to move forward from this.

The reason you feel guilty is that you’re better than the person who messed up. If you weren’t you’d still be doing it and not really caring. So instead of judging yourself for the mistake, you made me proud that you feel bad about it. Because that means you are already better.

Think back to the person you were at rock bottom. You know that person you didn’t even recognize. That person you never want to be and the place in your life you never want to visit again. Well, you aren’t that person anymore. Take pride in that. Don’t focus on this negative bump in the road but rather where you go from here.

You’ve gotten through the hardest part of this. You beat it once. Now you just have to make sure this doesn’t turn into a downward spiral of getting worse. I know you don’t want that to happen. Getting off track a bit doesn’t mean you can’t get right back on it.

You have the ability to bounce back from this. And I believe you are strong enough to do it.

You didn’t go through all you have already to let this beat you. Maybe there was jail time. Maybe you were in and out of rehab. You don’t see it but you have come far. More than that you’re one of those people who didn’t have to die to learn their lesson. Value the life you’ve been given to improve even when you miss a step now and then.

Because a lot of life not just when it comes to drugs is messing up and moving forward and trying to be better than the mistake you made. Remember we are all human. We may not all be drug addicts but we are all people who make mistakes every day. That’s all this is. Now stop letting a mere moment of weakness define you and instead decide where you go from here.
